Detection-as-Code

Practise as: Explain it · Interview · Deep diveLevel: L3 Applied

Interview questionWhat does detection-as-code mean in practice, and what does it fix?

  1. 01 What is it?
  2. 02 How is it abused?
  3. 03 How do you stop it?
What a strong answer covers

Try it out loud first. Then check yourself:

  1. Rules live in version control with metadata: ATT&CK technique, data source, severity, owner and a triage runbook.
  2. Changes go through review and CI: syntax checks, then tests that replay known-bad sample events and expect an alert.
  3. Deployment to the SIEM is automated and repeatable, so every rule in production matches what was reviewed.
  4. It fixes drift, untested rules and lost context, and makes rollback and audits easy.

If the interviewer pushes back

  • How would you test a detection automatically when you cannot safely run the real attack in CI?
